Culotte Skirt, the Parisian Style Way
Paris, France is considered to be one of the fashion epicenters of the world. Many of the most popular global fashion trends can be traced back to one or more of the leading fashion designers in the world. Thus, one of the more popular fashions is the “jupe culotte”, French for culotte skirt the Parisian style way.
The culotte skirt has only been a fashion necessity in France, but a true classic! You can be part of the wave of women who are catching on to unique fashion styles like culottes. Some styles of culotte skirts will not give you the Parisian style you’re after. However, in this article, you’ll find style guides with the right “jupe culotte” for your Parisian look.
How the French wear their culotte skirts
Once you have decided to buy your first culotte skirt, you will be surprised to see that there are so many different tops and blouses that will complement your look. Also, your specific body type will determine which culotte skirt will fit you best.
Fortunately, you will likely find them in a wide range of cloth including denim, corduroy, suede, woolen and even leather, if you are into that.
My favorite are the corduroy and woolen kinds. They’re lovely to wear in the fall and winter. Likewise, you can wear them with a wool sweater, a blouse, and even a jacket.
In addition during the spring season, you can wear them in suede and leather.
More, in the summer, you can wear them in denim, cotton blend, or linen.
Who was credited with first creating the culotte skirt and why?
The culotte is not a fad. It’s a classic style that you can wear time and time again. Additionally, one of the things that frequently helps to drive what women wear is functionality. That is likely one of the driving forces behind the culotte skirt being introduced to the tennis world at Wimbledon.
Furthermore, in 1931, a woman tennis player named Lili De Alvarez wore the very first culotte skirt during a Wimbledon tennis match.
It was created by Italian designer Elsa Schiaparelli (born in Rome, Italy in 1890 – died in Paris, France in 1973). Consequently, she’s commonly thought to be the person who came up with the idea for the “jupe culotte”. She likely thought her fashion concept would be beneficial to lady tennis players at the time as well as fashionable. Moreover, when you go to Paris, you should visit her famous couture house at Place Vendôme in Paris, France.
Who are some of the designers that carry the culotte skirt?
These days some of the most recognizable women have embraced the unusual-looking fashion style of the French “jupe culotte”. Even Duchess Kate Middleton has been seen around wearing one of many different styles of the split-legged skirt. Today, there are a few high-fashion and luxury brand designers around the world that agree that the split skirt has a place in the hypercompetitive world of high fashion.
Again, some of these top luxury designers include Celine and Chanel. Likewise, some mass retailers are willing to bet on the popularity of the garments. One of them is Zara (a Spanish apparel retailer). Like any fashion statement that has its roots in many decades, it’s here to stay since it is a fairly versatile garment.
The evolution of the split skirt, from its beginning, was a way for women to enter the business world–also in the sports world in the early 1930s as a split skirt design. Today, it fits in more with luxury living for the woman who wants its comfort and practicality. Further, as a personal stylist expert in Parisian style, I think that the uniqueness of the culotte skirt is that it easily brings out the femininity of a skirt with the reassurance of trousers in everyone who wears them. So, if you are looking to shake up your wardrobe a little, give the “jupe culotte” a shot. You may like what you see.
