Parisian Style Sailor Pant

Parisian Style Sailor Pant: Red sailor pant with striped top and high heels

The Parisian style sailor pant is a French staple. It’s basically wide-legged and high-waisted. Furthermore, it has a buttoned-down flap opening at the front. It is often called pantalon à pont, or pantalon-style marin in French.

However, some pants are shorter, tighter, and bell-bottomed. But the pant is designed for comfort. Also, it flattens the tummy and lengthens the legs. I’m your luxury living expert in Parisian style. As a consequence, I’ll help you wear it with confidence and self-esteem.

History of Parisian Style Sailor Pant

Chanel adapted the sailor’s pant for women: Sailor pant outfit with snickers

The flared-out pant was common in 19th century navies. It made cleaning work easy.  However, in the 1920s, French women began wearing it. This was due to French designer Coco Chanel. Women had worn trousers for men’s work but not as a fashion item. Their clothing was mostly restrictive. Now Chanel wanted them to be able to:

  • Breathe easily
  • Feel comfortable
  • Have freedom of movement

Chanel adapted the sailor’s pant for women. Also, the sailors’ blue-and-white-striped Breton tee.

How the French Wear the Pantalon à Pont

French women wear the pant effortlessly. As your personal stylist, I can help you do likewise. Here are some French-inspired looks I specialize in.

The Spring / Summer Look

-The Classic Sailor Look

Pair your pantalon à pont with the blue–and-white-striped tee, or any striped combination. Tuck your top in. It’ll emphasize your neat waist and the pant buttons. Complete the look with French-style or feminine sneakers for a casual look or with heels, pumps, or espadrilles for a dressy look!

Likewise in the spring, but you’ll wear your pant with a short-sleeved, striped knit sweater.

-The Bell-bottomed Look

You can wear a shorter, tighter bell-bottomed pant. They’re great in spring as office wear, just like Duchess Kate. Also throw on a hip-length white tee or a blouse. But don’t tuck it in. It looks great outside the pant. Complete the ensemble with a short jacket and classic pumps.

Summer outfit Parisian style: Make your blouse color match the buttons - it’s impactful! Also, you can wear the pantalon-style marin with an off-shoulder top for a carefree look

Summer is the season for mixing and matching. Let your creativity flow. Wear your pretty top inside for a more professional look. Moreover, outside of the pant for a more casual look. Make your blouse color match the buttons – it’s impactful! Also, you can wear the pantalon-style marin with an off-shoulder top for a carefree look.

The Fall / Winter Look

-The Work Look for the Office.

Your pant will undoubtedly have a heavier fabric. Consequently, this can be a polyester blend or a wool blend. Pair your pant with a white button-down top. Or a silky shirt in a muted color – only if it enhances your natural coloring. This draws attention to the button design – metallic for example. Overall, the look is formal and great! You’ll be seen as the CEO. Together with elegance, draw attention during a meeting effortlessly.

For a more casual look! Top your pant with a polo-necked sweater.

Thus, for a more casual look! Top your pant with a polo-necked sweater. Or throw a matching jacket over a white tee – wear with a wedge-style bootie. This keeps out the winter chills.

For a sleeker but casual look, wear all black. Complete the look with leather jacket and booties.  In the latter, red lips or colorful accessories are a must!
