Le boléro, or shrug, is a trimmed, cardigan-like garment with short or long sleeves, available in an array of fabrics from cotton to luxurious silk. An earlier version of the boléro, “Le bolero dress”, was created by Charles Frederick Worth (1825–1895) the most famous English fashion designer established in Paris, France. He was also the first to create and employ the principle of design and fashion that would be called haute couture. Is the bolero a piece of clothing or an accessory?

The modern boléro created by Cristobal Balanciaga, a Spanish Basque and talented fashion designer, was inspired by the matador’s chaquetilla (costume worn by Spanish Matadors or bull fighter), much like the style seen in the Zorro TV motion pictures.  It is also worn by bull fighters in the Landes region of France and known as “Costume Landais”.

Why you should wear a bolero?

They’re great to wear for light warmth on a breezy summer night out.

Likewise, shrugs will give that slender look as it cinches to the waist. Furthermore, you can easily adapt it to any style and figure.

Consequently, French women love the ease that comes with wearing a boléro instead of carrying a sweater or jacket on their arm or in a bag while taking a stroll – to go from a summer day to a cool evening. More than that, you never know when the weather might change “brusquement”, French for abruptly.

It is a remarkable accessory.

How to wear it

The neck-lengthening high, stand-up collar which accompanies most winter/fall wedding dresses, is a masterpiece of an accessory.
